Getting the Ball Rolling

First and foremost, Thank You, to those who are following our progress. It means a lot to have people believe in this foundation as much as we do. Today shall be considered our first official meeting. We celebrated with IRS paperwork! Posting pictures, and introducing ourselves to the world. In attendance: Alicia (Lita- Founder), Nikki (Co-founder/survivor), Chris (Board member/Maker of Dinner), Shanna (Expert/Board member). We are very excited to get things going. This is going to be a long road, but above all a rewarding adventure. We will continue to keep you posted as we get through the ups and downs of starting a foundation. We look forward to hearing from you. Feel free to post comments and/or stories of your own. Remember that every day is a gift.

My name is Nicole, I am 27 years old. My younger sister Alicia is 24. We grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah with our three older brothers and extended family close by. Our mom passed away at an early time in our lives from Colon Cancer. Losing our mom was an extremely difficult experience, one that to this day is still painful. My sister and I were 16 and 13 at the time and still needed care given by extended family members. We stuck together and our “sister” relationship became very strong and appreciated. My sister Alicia is my best friend. She is the youngest of five children and was always looked at with having such an unconditional loving heart that more than once took care of her older siblings. The word "cancer” itself is terrifying after seeing our mom lose her battle, little did I know, I, Nicole would have a battle of my own to face. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer when I was 23. Following my diagnosis I underwent a mastectomy of my left breast, followed by many intense treatments of chemotherapy. Going through something of this nature of course added so much stress full of frightened emotions and helplessness. My own feelings and thoughts surrounding my situation I felt could be somewhat controlled by positive thinking and a focused effort on my own recovery. One stress that could not be controlled was the overwhelming medical bills piling up each day so unfortunately I was not in a position to take many days off of work to relax my body and mind. This was noticed by my younger sister Alicia, (Lita), who then took it upon herself to organize a fund-raiser to help aid the overwhelming medical expenses. Hence, Lita's Gift was born....

About the Foundation

“Lita’s Gift” was inspired and founded by my sister Alicia. Her gift to me was a fund-raiser to help with my expenses and now has become a gift the both of us want to put out there and begin helping others financially who are going through a cancer crisis. Because of her amazing heart and with the help of family, friends, and so many others we were able to make a rather large dent in the building pile of my medical expenses. My sister has inspired both of us to avidly work towards building this foundation as a gift to those who are in need of help with medical expenses. There are wonderful organizations out there working on the cure for cancer, which is amazing. However there is still the problem that exist today and that is the stress of bills, costly wigs and prescriptions. I know how much it meant and how much stress was relieved after being handed even enough money to pay off one of my bills. I was then able to focus on my own recovery from surgeries, treatments, and not the stress of the mounting bills. My sister grew up with the childhood nickname “Lita”, which inspired the name of the foundation. Lita's amazing heart brings tears to my eyes as I think about the blessing she gave to me as her goal was to hand me enough money so I could even take just one day off from work to relax and catch up on much needed sleep. She is such a strength to me and I look up to her so much. Follow us on our journey to bring “Lita’s Gift” forth and help those in need, just as I was.
